About the Town of Brookline

Brookline, a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, is an integral part of the Boston metropolitan area. This historic town, first settled in 1638 as the hamlet of Muddy River, was incorporated as an independent town in 1705. Brookline borders six of Boston's neighborhoods and is adjacent to the city of Newton. With a population of 63,191 as per the 2020 census, it is the most populous municipality in Massachusetts with a town (rather than city) form of government since Framingham's transition to a city in 2018.

Originally part of Algonquian territory, Brookline's northern and southern borders were defined by two small rivers, or brooks, lending to its namesake. The area has long been known for its verdant and pleasant environment, often described in the 19th century as akin to a landscape garden. Brookline was also at the forefront of social progress, with residents advocating for women's voting rights as early as the 1880s.

Brookline's development was significantly influenced by its transportation history. The Boston and Worcester Turnpike, now Massachusetts Route 9, was a major thoroughfare through the town as early as 1810. The arrival of steam railroads in the mid-19th century further enhanced its connectivity, with several major rail lines passing through or near Brookline, contributing to its development as a streetcar suburb. The Green Line D and C branches of the Boston subway system have their roots in these early transportation developments.

Despite its rich history and prime location, Brookline faces challenges with affordability and diversity. Housing restrictions have led to a predominantly wealthy and racially homogeneous population, with a notable gap in the representation of Black residents compared to other communities in the Boston area. This housing affordability issue also impacts local workers in essential services, with a small percentage able to reside within the town.
